Unit 11 What do you like?



Part 1 Analysis of the teaching material



(I)                           Position and functions of the teaching material:


1. The contents of the lesson is Friends with English Book 1, Unit 11 What do you like?


2. This lesson is the first one of Unit 11. It’s a very important part. 3.This lesson is related to real life, so it is helpful to raise students’ interest, and improve their spoken English.



(II)                       Teaching aims and demands


  Knowledge objects.


1.     To learn the new words: cake, cheese, ice cream, bread, salad, soda, and the master sentences: What do you like? I like …… I don’t like ……


2.     To make the students to know how to use the sentences by learning this lesson.


Ability objects:  


1.To improve students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing ability.


2.To develop students’ communication, imagination and operation by learning this lesson.


  Moral objects


To enable the students to pay attention to health, we mustn’t have partiality for only one food, it’s unhealthy.


(III) Teaching key point


   The new words and the master sentences.(Students be able to talk about food and express like and don’t like.)


(IV) Teaching difficult point


Communicate with the sentences:


What do you like?


I like ……


I don’t like ……


(V)            Teaching aids:


Pictures, computer, food ,object ect.


Part 2 Teaching methods


(I)                           Eight steps approach.


(II)                       Communicative approach.


(III)                    TPR.


(The basis of the establishment teaching methods:


According to the request of syllabus and the children’s characteristics, improve the students’ reading, speaking, listening and writing ability.                                                                                                                                                             


Part 3 Studying ways :


(I)                           The students understand how to be successful language learners .


(II)                       The students understand how to master dialogues and how to communicate in real life by the communicative approach.


Part 4 Teaching procedure:



Step 1 Warming up


1.     Greetings.


2.     Get the students to sing a song “ The happy song” and dance together.


(This step is employed to warm up the students and raise the interests of the students’. )


Step 2 Revision


Play a game :  Look at the colors, and guess  “What fruits is it ?”


(This step is employed to revise the words about the food. At the same time, draw the students’ attention to the topic about food. )



Step 3 Presentation


1.     lead-in


First, Tell the students we will go to an interesting place. Watch TV and sing a song “Where are we going?”, then show a picture of supermarket, tell the students we go to the supermarket, lead in the lesson.


  ( This step is employed to raise the interests of the student, and lead in the new lesson by a natural way.)


  2.Then, visit the supermarket, and answer the question : what can you see in the supermarket? Learn the new words which they can see.  To show an orange and taste the orange in the class ,make the body language, say: Mm, it is very delicious, I like orange. Let the students taste the orange too, to learn the sentence: I like …… Then , to show  a cake and taste the cake, make the body language, say : I don’t like …….to learn the sentence: I don’t like…..


At last, to show some food to ask the students : What do you like ? Let the students choose the food to taste, and express they like and they don’t like. The students are able to learn the new words and sentences by the way of work in pair, work in group, or ask and answer one by one.


(This step is employed to learn the new words and sentences. At the same time, let the students have a chance to improve their reading, listening, speaking, writing ability.)


Step 4 Practice


(I)                           Guessing game


Show the picture with computer, just can see the half of the picture, let the students guess: What food is it ?  


(This step is employed to give a deep understanding of the new words.)


(II)                       Listen and number.


It’s employed to improve students’ listening ability.


(III)                    Remember game


Give the students about one minute to try to remember the food which they like and they don’t like. Then the students are required to remember the food, and say the sentences : I like …. I don’t like….


(This step is employed to raise the interests of the students’ and practice the words and sentences.)


(IV)                    Conversation


   Show “the conversation’’ as a film, see the film and answer the question :What does Gogo like ? (It ’s employed to make the students get the general idea of the dialogue as a whole one, at the same time, let the students have a chance to practice their listening ability.)


  Then, See the film once again, give the student about two minutes to practice the dialogue in group. At last, ask some groups to act the dialogue.


   (This step is employed to give the students a deep understanding of the conversation, improve their speaking ability.)


Step 5  Consolidation


Set up the situation, some lovely friends are in the party, we are invited to the party, too .(Show it on the screen using the computer), give the students 3-4 minutes to make a similar dialogue , talk about   the food you like and you don’t like. Then, ask some pairs to act it out in front of the other students.


At last the teacher gives some advice on making such dialogue, in the meanwhile deal with the moral lessons which the students should pay attention to health, we mustn’t have partiality for only one food.


(This step is employed to create a dialogue for students’ communication in the class, and to give the students a chance to practice their oral English quasi-communicative situation. At the same time, deal with the moral lessons .)


Step 6 Challenging activities


Let the student draw a funny picture, “The Real Me”, showing the food they like, have the students share their pictures in the class, making the sentences about what do they like, eg: I like cake. What do you like? Then , let the students  talk about the picture and practice the sentences in group.


  ( This step is employed to let the students practice the sentences and words, at the same time create students’ imagination and operation)


Step 7 Summary and expand knowledge.


Visit the supermarket once again to wake up the words and sentences. To introduce some other food , make friends with the foreigner, lead the students to understand the different food between China and other country. This step is employed to have a summary by a natural way, and develop students’ vision, help students to understand the cultural differences between the East and West.


Step8 Homework


1.       Try your best to find out the food in the net. ( http://www.google.com搜索:食物 )


Ask your friends or parents :What do you like?


Make a survey.

This step is employed to practice the words and sentences in real life, and to expand students’ knowledge.
